Program description
Children who are physically very restless, constantly put things or fingers in their mouth or fidget with objects, shout a lot, or self-stimulate are described as sensory seeking. With this behaviour, they try to increase the amount of sensory input because some of their senses register sensory input too weakly. The child therefore has to do more in order to feel comfortable in their body and get the regulation they need.
Other children are sensory avoiding. They may be very sensitive to clothing labels, loud noises, certain types of touch, bright light, textures, or tastes, or they may simply often feel quickly overstimulated. Contrary to sensory seeking kids the cause here is that the nervous system perceives input too strongly, so it feels overwhelming and uncomfortable.
Even though sensory seeking and sensory avoiding behaviours can look like opposites, they actually have the same underlying cause, namely that the processing of sensory input is (still) not working optimally. The same child may react in a sensory seeking with respect to some types of input and in a sensory avoiding way w.r.t others, and this can even vary at different times. In fact, it is most common for children to show both patterns.
What all children with sensory difficulties have in common is that we can support them in processing sensory input more effectively. You can do this by paying attention in everyday life to whether your childโs senses are getting the right amount of input. For some kinds of input, your child may need less, and for others, more. In this program, you will learn how to put this into practice in daily life.
This program contains the best exercises for basic sensory stimulation that are easy to do at home, even in a busy family routine. You will also find background knowledge and lots of practical tips and concrete inspiration for how you can easily introduce regulating, sensorimotor games and activities at home.
